Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such treatments need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
